SCIENTIFIC CONSULTANCY

Julian Nott consults on all aspects of the design, construction and operation of light than air craft and related scientific projects. He has an unparalleled range of experience of design and operation from the smallest craft such as those of SpaceData Corporation www.spacedata.net, to the largest blimps and airships, including the US Navy Sentinel 1000 and the Shell Natural Gas Airship, one of the largest crafts ever proposed. Current work includes the design of balloons proposed to be launched in the atmosphere of Venus and Titan, the moon of Saturn.

Clients have found his astute contributions invaluable, especially to the initial, creative stages where crucial decisions are made to ensure the different elements of a project or craft will ultimately function together as a complete system.

He has unique ability and experience in the mathematical analysis of the performance of all kinds of balloon systems and especially the thermal analysis which is so important to all lighter than air craft. Changes in the temperature of the gas inside the craft change the lift and thus its fundamental ability to fly. This included extensive work on the thermal and lift analysis of Stratospheric / Near Space blimps. Nott's theoretical predictions of performance have been tested and refined by numerous practical flights. There could be no more dramatic demonstration of Nott's abilities than the succession of novel balloon systems he has designed, built and piloted to establish the 79 world balloon records, all without serious accident.

Nott has unique specialist knowledge of life support, escape and survival systems specifically suited to lighter than air craft including having developed parachutes specifically to escape from high altitude balloons.

GENERAL CONSULTANCY

Nott has advised on all aspects of lighter than air flight for a wide range of non- scientific projects, including commercial advertising and TV and Motion Picture Films. A sample of his credits across the world include Independent Television News and BBC Television in Britain, CBS and The Discovery Channel in the United States,Channel 10 in Australia and TV-Asahi in Japan.

BOARDS

Nott has served on several corporate boards and many administrative and technical committees. He is currently serving his fifth year as  secretary of the prestigious AIAA [American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics] Scientific Balloon Committee and a Member of the Board of Scientific Advisers of SpaceData Corporation www.spacedata.net, the only entity in the world currently operating in the Stratosphere / Near Space.
